HONEYKAK TATTOO

Hello there .ᐟMy name is Cassi and I own Needle in a Haystack Tattoo. I'm 26 years old, and I've been tattooing for almost 4 years. I attended Western Kentucky University and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology. In my time there, I also managed to take a few studio art courses and discovered art can be a career.During and after my apprenticeship, I made it my job to carve out a niche in the industry. I wanted somewhere safe, clean, and accommodating for all types of people. A more therapeutic approach to tattoo, where you can get a meaningful memorial piece or just a little silly bug. No judgement, and full body autonomy. Speak your mind, place that stencil over and over- I'm here to bring your vision to life.

According to a handful of personality descriptors, I'm a

Take what you want out of this info, I'm skeptical at best but resonate with lots of things!

ANY QUESTIONS, ANY CONCERNS;

Bring a valid government issued ID for paperwork. (You must be over 18 to get tattooed at our shop!) Get a good night's rest - Your body needs the energy. Have something in your stomach at least an hour before your appointment. We want to keep your blood sugar up! The sooner you eat before your appointment, the better. Don't take any bloodthinners for 12 hours prior to the appointment. (i.e. acetaminophen, ibuprofen, alcohol, marijuana, etc.) They can thin the blood or slow clotting time. Bring a snack or cold drink! (I supply some treats, but if you have allergies, I may not be able to accommodate!) Don't shave beforehand - It may cause skin irritation which could impact the application of the tattoo.

Not at this time! While it is completely legal in Kentucky to get a tattoo as young as 16, our shop will not tattoo anyone under 18. If you find a shop that will tattoo minors, they will have specific paperwork that will need to be notarized beforehand. Some shops have a notary on staff to help expedite the process. We don't know of any shops locally that will tattoo minors, so we are unable to give recommendations at this time.

This is completely up to the discretion of you and your tattoo artist. Please discuss with your artist before using numbing creams prior to your appointment. There was an article put out by the FDA that warns against specific brands and applications [[here]](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-warns-consumers-avoid-certain-topical-pain-relief-products-due-potential-dangerous-health). Honeykak prefers not to tattoo skin that has been numbed (i.e. it constricts blood vessels which can cause for a rougher healing period once the numbing wears off, it can impact the texture of the skin & how the ink is retained, etc). However, she does offer Bactine (4% lidocaine spray) upon request.

You are more than welcome to bring your own design if you've drawn it yourself or purchased it from an artist. To maintain artistic integrity, we will not copy tattoos off someone else's body unless given explicit permission. 99% of the time, we want your new tattoo to be unique and specialized just for you. We prefer to redraw or incorporate *your* touch into the design if you find one you like outside of our shop.

We specialize in making your tattoo experience as calm and relaxed as you desire. Needle in a Haystack Tattoo is a private studio space, so we can maintain a quiet and calm environment with little to no interruptions. If you want to chat to keep your mind off things, or would prefer to put on headphones and zone out, we can accommodate either. If you start to feel faint, you are in safe hands. We have specific procedures (& tips/tricks) for keeping you feeling your best. There's also a fully-stocked snack bar that includes light eats, sodas, water, and tea. Honeykak can even pace you through each step of the process, and work at your speed if you need breaks.

You are more than welcome to bring a friend (or a few) with you to your appointment. We have enough seating for up to five individuals, not including the person receiving the tattoo.

Tattoos hurt differently on different body parts and different people. Everyone has a different pain tolerance. This can make it hard to estimate exactly how much a tattoo will hurt in any given area. Softer, meatier areas (i.e. underarm, armpit, inner thigh, etc.) are known to be spicier. Thinner skinned areas (i.e. sternum, collarbone, joints, etc) are also known to be more sensitive. This can vary to person to person. Many people compare the feeling to a very bad sunburn thats being poked with a sharp pen. Cat scratches are also a close comparison. It tends to be a hot, spicy sensation more than sharp, stabby pain. Variables like artist, tattoo machine, and technique/style can also all play a role in pain.

90% of the time, we will need a consult to be sure. Feel free to reach out to our artists about scheduling a free consult, or we may be able to tell from a picture.

MY TATTOO MORALS

Getting a tattoo is an exercise in *vulnerability and trust.*It is a process of altering the body permanently.
It isn't a process to be taken lightly & I emphasize the importance of researching your artist beforehand.
Through my experience with tattooing, I've come to understand that tattooing can be used to heal.
It can be an exercise of regaining body autonomy, of honoring or memorializing, working on body dysmorphia, or making the identity inside match the outside.
It can mean so much to someone or mean absolutely nothing at all.
Both options deserve respect in return for the trust.

On the other hand, tattoos can also be used for harm.
The industry has a bad background of uneven power dynamics, taking advantage of clients, and not prioritizing the health & safety of the client. As someone within the industry, I can recognize these patterns and feel it's my responsibility to break the cycle. This can be done with honesty, reliability, returning vulnerability, and appropriate boundaries.
𓆝 𓆟 It has always been the responsibility of those inside of the industry to protect those within. 𓆞 𓆝In the USA, there are no federal regulations in terms of tattoo application or products. At the state level, health department inspections and licensure can help with health & sanitation. But some states are more lax than others.
For example, KY requires a health inspection of your studio (check for running hot water, sharps containers, autoclave, etc.) and licensure (no test or experience necessary, you just need a BBP course & $100 to register).
I strongly suggest visiting the shop beforehand or viewing a portfolio before a needle gets anywhere near you. View the artist's portfolios beforehand and never leave the responsibility of choice in our hands unless you trust them. Some artists will take your blind trust (and money) and run as far as they can with it!
Due to how unregulated the industry can be, YOU (the client) are responsible for your own care.No matter what anyone says or does: it is YOUR body - you should always get the final say.Tattoo artists will set boundaries for your protection and theirs.
It is important to respect these for the health of both parties.

⊹ client rights ⊹⊹ artist rights ⊹
a clean and sanitary place to receive a tattoo.the ability to reject certain projects, iconography, or placements. (you don't want an artist who isn't excited to work on your tattoo!)
a space to feel safe to ask questions and discuss options with an artist.the space to talk openly about the realities of your potential tattoo (i.e. longevity, integrity of a design, etc.)
the space to back out or alter a tattoo if you aren't 100% certain - completely guilt-free.Time away from their clients (i.e. many artists are designing, tattooing, book-keeping, marketing, and responding to clients 24/7 with no space for solitude or recuperation.)
honesty about the integrity of a tattoo to ensure it lasts as long as you do.
honesty from the artist about their skill set and what projects they are comfortable taking on.
an open line of communication (in terms of questions, concerns, and expectations).
